Generic drugs are medications with the same active ingredient(s) as their brand-name counterpart and are equal in dosage, safety, strength, quality, performance and use. Generic drugs produce the same effects in the body as brand name drugs. The two main differences between a brand-name drug and a generic drug are the name and the cost.

Always check with your physician or pharmacist to see if a generic is available and right for you. If a generic substitution is not available, there may be a similar or less expensive drug in your health plan’s formulary that works the same way.
